How to Reinstall NGFW on a Serial Console Device (w4, w8, Q4, Q8, Q8W)

Overview

Changing or upgrading hardware and now you need to do a fresh install of the Edge Threat Management NG Firewall software?

These are the steps you should take. Please note that the reinstall must be completed in-person, with physical access to the hardware you're installing onto. (You cannot reinstall remotely.) 

  1. Create a Configuration Backup of your custom settings and rule sets

  2. Download and install the software
  3. Walk through the Setup Wizard

    NOTES: Every item listed below is a potential hurdle that could derail the install process. Please take careful note of all of them.

    • You must first connect to the serial console port from a computer. Steps for this process are outlined in the link below:

    • Once the unit powers on you will be taken to a screen with a "Welcome to Grub!" message.

    • You may get an error when trying to create partitions

      To correct this:
      1. Use the left arrow key on your keyboard to select Go Back, then Enter.

      2. This will take you to a list of options Use the Up arrow key to select Detect Disks, press Enter.

      3. You will then be presented with options for how to partition. Again use the Arrow keys to select "Guided - use entire disk", then press Enter.

      4. Make sure "MMC/SD card #1 is selected, press Enter.

      The installer will now resume and complete automatically.


  4. Restore the Configuration Backup

  5. Add UID to the account

  6. Transfer your subscription(s) to the new UID
