Overview of Micro Edge Policies in ETM Dashboard
Overview
A Micro Edge policy is a complete set of configurations for a Micro Edge appliance. Policies are created and managed directly in ETM Dashboard, without the need to access a specific Micro Edge appliance.
Policies enable the admin to synchronize configurations to multiple Micro Edge appliances, ensuring a consistent setup across your network. They can also be used to create 'staging' versions of appliances to partially or entirely configure a new Micro Edge appliance as soon as it connects to the internet.
As the Micro Edge Policies feature is substantial, each subtopic is broken down into a specific article.
Policies
A policy enables the admin to create a set of configurational options for a specific purpose, whether that be the default configuration of Micro Edge appliances; a more security-focused posture; a policy specific to branch offices; and so forth.
For more information on configuring Policies, please refer to this article: Managing Micro Edge Policies in ETM Dashboard: Policies
Rules
Rules enable the admin to create a single rule in a specific area of Micro Edge: services such as Web Filter or Application Control; layer-3 configuration such as NAT Rules or Port Forward Rules; or general Security Rules (also known as Filter Rules in Micro Edge).
For more information on configuring Rules, please refer to this article: Managing Micro Edge Policies in ETM Dashboard: Rules
When using both Policies and Rules, both are evaluated.
Objects
An Object is a grouping of one or more traits: IP addresses, interfaces, application identifications, user or VLAN tag groups, and so forth. Grouping these traits together enables the admin to refer to that grouping by its name in Policies and Rules.
For example, you might have an Object called "Blocked countries", which contains the geo-IP locations of several geographical regions you would like to block. You can then create a rule using that Object specifically:

Templates
A template is a complete set of configuration options for a specific service or feature: apps like Web Filter or Captive Portal; DNS; and DHCP settings. Templates are useful when you would like to deploy an identical configuration to multiple Micro Edge appliances, such as branch offices or backup units.
For more information on configuring templates, please refer to this article: Managing Micro Edge Policies in ETM Dashboard: Templates
Assignment
The Assignment area governs which policies are pushed to which appliances and when those policies are synced to the target appliance(s).
