Configuring network interfaces in Micro Edge

Overview

The Interfaces screen defines how your appliance connects to the Internet, wireless networks, cellular networks, local networks, and remote networks via VPN tunnels. You can configure your Interfaces from the Settings screen under Network > Interfaces.

WAN interfaces

You can configure any Interface as a WAN interface. Micro Edge monitors WAN interfaces for status and performance and incorporates them in WAN Policies, Traffic Shaping, and Reports.

To configure TCP/IP settings for WAN interfaces:

  1. Click the edit sdwr-edit-icon.png icon next to the interface you want to make a WAN interface.
  2. Set an Interface Name to help you identify this interface.
  3. Enable the option Is WAN.
  4. If you have multiple IPv4 addresses, add them using the IPv4 Aliases button.
  5. In the IPv4 tab, set your Config Type (DHCP / Static / PPPoE).
  6. If your WAN connection uses IPv6, click the IPv6 tab and set your Config Type (Disabled / Static / SLAAC / DHCP).
  7. Enable the option NAT traffic … unless you do not have a need to translate network addresses.
  8. Click Save to confirm your changes.

Configuring port speed settings

In special situations, the upstream modem or router device may not support automatic link speed negotiation. In this case, it may be necessary to manually set the port speed of the associated interface port. To configure the port speed, navigate to the Advanced tab and set the required Link Speed and Duplex values.

LTE interface

The e6wl appliance includes an LTE interface for connection to cellular networks. Refer to Configuring the LTE connection in Micro Edge for details.

Wireless network interfaces

If your Micro Edge device supports WiFi, you can manage the wireless configuration in the Interfaces screen. You can use wireless interfaces to set up a wireless network in Access Point mode (AP) or to connect to an existing wireless network in client mode. You can recognize wireless interfaces by the “WIFI” notation in the Name / Type / Device column.

To configure wireless networking:

  1. Click the edit sdwr-edit-icon.png icon next to the interface.
  2. Set an Interface Name to help you identify this interface.
  3. If you receive Internet connectivity via WiFi using this interface, enable the option Is WAN.
  4. In the IPv4 tab, set the Config Type and corresponding TCP/IP parameters if required.
  5. Click the WiFi tab to configure the following parameters for your wireless network:

    Wireless Mode

    Access Point (AP) or Client

    Wireless SSID

    The name of the WiFi network to join (Client mode) or to broadcast (AP mode).

    Wireless Encryption

    The type of wireless encryption to use (None / WPA / WPA2).

    Wireless Password

    The password required to use the encrypted network.

    Wireless Channel

    The wireless channel for your WiFi network.

    HT Mode

    Refers to the throughput mode. Default is Auto. Note that high values such as VHT80 increase throughput but decrease range.

  6. Click Save to confirm your changes.

Local network interfaces

You can configure any Interface as a local or LAN interface.

To configure LAN interfaces:

  1. Click the edit sdwr-edit-icon.png icon next to the interface.
  2. Set an Interface Name to help you identify this interface.
  3. Select a Config Type (addressed or bridged). In bridged mode, you must associate an addressed interface.
  4. Disable the option Is WAN.
  5. In the IPv4 tab, set the IP address and network mask for your local network.
  6. If you use IPv6, click the IPv6 tab and set your Config Type (Disabled / Static / Assign).
  7. Disable NAT traffic ... unless you have local servers on your network that must be accessible from local devices.
  8. Click the DHCP tab.
  9. If you want to assign IP addresses automatically, enable DHCP serving and enter the IP range.
  10. Click Save to confirm your changes.

VPN tunnel Interfaces

You can add VPN tunnels to connect Micro Edge to other networks. See Adding VPN tunnels in Micro Edge for configuration details.

VLAN Interfaces

You can create 802.1Q Virtual LAN network interfaces to segment your local network. See Configuring VLANs in Micro Edge for configuration details.
